Teacher Appreciation Week: How to Celebrate and Show Gratitude

Teacher Appreciation Week 2023 is May 8th-12th.

Teachers dedicate a lot of time and energy to our children, providing guidance and being there for them when they need a little extra support. In addition to the duties of teaching, many educators go above and beyond. They take on the part of a coach, advocate, or mentor to children, shaping lives forever.

Teaching was never an easy role, but the trials of the pandemic created challenges no one could've anticipated. Within weeks, most teachers had to shift plans, step outside of the box, and find ways to connect with students virtually. Through it all, teachers remained agile and proved time and time again that their work is more than just what's designated by the curriculum.

Despite its challenges, the last few years has been a learning opportunity for most. Many caregivers learned how difficult a teacher's job could be as they worked together to find solutions to new problems and come up with ways to engage children over the internet. While showing teacher appreciation all year long is a good way to demonstrate that you cherish all that your child's teacher does, certain days of the year can remind us to do so.

With this in mind, here's how to repay teachers in your life for their hard work and kindness during Teacher Appreciation Week.

How to Show Gratitude for Educators During Teacher Appreciation Week

Find Out What They Need Most in the Classroom

Teachers often come out of pocket to fund any additional activities or supplies in their classrooms. They do this to make the learning experience more enjoyable for their students. Find out what is needed most in the classroom and organize an effort to collect these items. You might also call on other parents to help you track down items or to create a fund to supplement your teacher's expenses.

If you're not sure what items are needed in the classroom, you can always ask. Most teachers are happy to share their upcoming plans or projects with parents. Some items, like picture books and chapter books as well as school supplies, are always needed. Classroom toys, movies, and games are always good items to stock up on and will most likely be welcomed.

Lend a Helping Hand

Teachers spend a lot of time in the classroom during and after school, as well as on weekends and holidays. Sometimes, the best support you can show is by offering your time and assistance. Volunteer a few times during the month or year to help with classroom projects, cleaning and organizing, or school events.

Even if you don't have a lot of extra time, a few minutes of helping to organize the classroom or clean up at the end of the day can go a long way. While you wait for your child to pack up their backpack or say goodbyes to their friends, offer to run an errand or to make copies.

Involve Your Kid in Your Efforts

Verbally thanking a teacher is an easy way for a caregiver to show gratitude, but it can be even more meaningful coming from the student. Have your child write a handwritten message or draw a picture.

Make it even more personal and significant by including special details. Find out what your child likes most about the class or what their favorite memory is with their teacher. Teachers not only cherish these expressions of appreciation when they get them but hold onto them for many years.

Respect Their Time

Teachers' work hours often extend beyond the classroom. Many spend their evenings and weekends grading papers and preparing lessons. In some cases, even summer vacations are spent teaching summer classes or tutoring. One of the simplest ways to show your gratitude is to give grace and respect their time.

This could mean scheduling meetings or conversations around the school day, rather than in the evenings or early mornings. It might also mean being patient if it takes a few hours or days to get back to you and not demanding immediate responses to questions. Sometimes, it's as easy as thanking them for taking the extra time to ensure your child receives the care and attention they need.

Be Their Advocate

Being an ally to teachers can help them overcome classroom challenges and increase their job satisfaction. Find out what they need most and take the lead in organizing efforts to get it. Reach out to other parents who might be willing to help with your efforts or research local organizations that may have resources available. You can also check in with your school's administration to let them know how much you value the work your child's teacher is doing for them and you.

Give a Gift

Find out what your child's teacher likes, whether it is tickets to a movie or live event or a gift certificate to a local restaurant, cafe, or store. You might also create a care package that is filled with all of their favorite snacks and books, or a self-care kit to help them relax. If you're looking for something truly unique and long-lasting, you might make a donation in their name to an organization they're passionate about.
